Christmas All Year 'Round

(about 2000)

I didn't know what to get you for Christmas.
I looked in the stores bright with sale signs, for a gift.
I counted my money and knew I'd spend every bit on you-
if I could.
But none of that was what you needed,
nor what I wanted to give to you.
And I got to thinking
about our Father's greatest gift to us all...
Money could not buy this tender gift.
He was not found in glamour among other 'for sale' items,
but rather in a poor stable- a home to weary, humble,
and simple farm animals.
so upon realizing this truth,
I searched my heart for those answers
which my mind
would not comprehend.
My friend...
if I could choose what gift to give, it would be...
a song with a melody... to penetrate your emotions,
to ease your fears,
to rest your anger and confusion...
and with words... to unravel memories of sunshiny days
and spread them thoughtfully before your eyes,
that you may have peace.
I would give to you the gift of my friendship-
that part which I feel for you
but can never express.
I would tell you how many minutes and hours I've spent
praying for you, because you're so worth worrying about.
I'd give you a perfect poem, one that you don't need to read,
because the words speak from off the page.
And I'd give you a thousand smiles,
and a friend who has his own sweet memories of being wrapped
in swaddling clothes, of resting in a bed of hay,
with angels singing praises forever to His name-
angels who maybe were you, and me.
Friend,
Merry Christmas all year round.
