(about 1996)
My eyes flirt with my surroundings.
They challenge the warm breeze,
play with the gray bug
making its way to my feet.
My eyes play along with the child
riding her bicycle
imagination whirling
with the wheels.
They count the petals on a purple flower,
dance with the sunshine on the grass
waving with the hush of summer.
My eyes fly with the airplane,
float with the clouds
beyond the mountains.
And they circle with the butterfly,
shiver with the snow
on the top mountain peaks.
But mostly . . .
my eyes reach
with those tears saved
for days that glow and burn.
And my eyes get lost
in that blue sky . . .
my eyes go beyond the blue
to the black;
beyond the black
to a light.
Tonight, if I stay here,
my eyes will intercept that light
and make a wish for you.
