The Gardener

(about 1994)

Take a moment to reflect
upon the memories of your heart-
All the vines and flowers growing there
from tiny seeds did start.

You couldn't plant them all alone-
Oh, no! Not on that day,
for you hardly knew the gentle soils
nor the fragile touch of rain.

But you went ahead to try,
for by the Gardener you were told
that if you gave the effort,
a garden He would mold.

He, who knew what kinds of seeds
would grow which kind of plant
would help you find rich beauty
on those days you said "I can't."

Now, in your heart what do you find
that's come form all your seeds?
A tulip and a rose or two,
or are there plagues of weeds?

I'm sure that in you there are both
for each grows side by side
as we plant our different seeds in life
and the consequences bide.

But I must remind you, friend of mine;
this Man who knows all seeds
won't only make our gardens grow,
but will also pull our weeds.
