Like a Kite

(about 1997)

(dedicated to Kim Wallin Granger, who saw the symbolism)

The one you love
is like a kite.

Why do you hold this kite in your hands?
It is useless.
You cannot praise it, for it has done nothing.
You cannot love its colors
for you haven't seen them
where they belong.
You cannot hold it with that one
special joy
for you have not seen it fly!

So let it fly! Let it go.
Unreel its string.

You must see how high it can really go,
how long it can stay
up there
without breaking, tearing.
You must see its true colors
the ones you see
against the blue of the sky.
And how does it work
when there is a storm?

You must walk, by yourself for a while
but always watch it.
You must see how it flies.

Then
you will always know how to fly it.
As you watch
you will see it,
know when the time is right
to pull it back, if it is true;

If the colors were true
or the way it flies and soars
is true.

Then
you will love it
in a true way if
when
it comes back.

So you hold your kite.
It is your kite.
Next time it flies, you will fly with it.
It will be the right way,
the only real way.

If it is true love,
it will come back to you.
